Why You Should See A Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician®

by Dr. Callan Martin DC, CCSP®, CSCS

Chiropractic Sports Physicians are trained and certified by the American Board of Chiropractic Sports Physicians(ABCSP), a licensing board recognized by the American Chiropractic Association(ACA) and the National Athletic Training Association(NATA)

One of the signers of Dr. Callan Martin’s CCSP® certificate was the Vice President of Sports Medicine for Team USA, Dr. Bill Moreau DC, DACBSP®. This advanced certification allows the CCSP® certified chiropractor to apply for a clinical rotation with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s Training Centers.

A Chiropractor, Athletic Trainer, Physical Therapist combo…

When treating athletes, a chiropractor needs advanced training beyond “cracking backs”. Sports injuries such as muscle strains, knee and ankle sprains, concussions and collision injuries require advanced training in evaluation and treatment. The complex movements an athlete make combining strength, stability, mobility and agility require advanced knowledge of multiple sports and their rigorous biomechanical implications.

A visit with a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician® will take longer than the few minutes spent by most chiropractors. The CCSP® will utilize advanced testing to diagnose and will often incorporate stretching, myofascial release, strength or coordination exercises in addition to the chiropractic adjustment. Nutrition, home exercise and recovery recommendations are often prescribed during these appointments as well.

A Certification Process Providing Advanced Training and Validation of Competency

Certified Chiropractic Sports Physicians® are doctors of chiropractic who have completed specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries. They are experts in the evaluation and management of musculoskeletal injuries, and they use a variety of techniques to help athletes recover from injuries and return to their sport. They are also trained in emergency procedures used to manage on-field emergencies such as cardiac arrest, fractures, dislocations, collapsed lung, spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injury.

CCSP® credentialed chiropractors are certified by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians® (ACBSP). The ACBSP® is a national organization that sets standards for chiropractic sports physicians and offers a certification exam. To be eligible for the CCSP® exam, doctors of chiropractic must have a minimum of 100 hours of postgraduate education in sports medicine and pass a written and practical exam.

Certified Chiropractic Sports Physicians® play an important role in the care of athletes. They can help athletes prevent injuries, they diagnose and treat injuries, and rehabilitate athletes after injuries. They can also provide advice on nutrition, fitness, and other aspects of sports performance.

  • They can diagnose and treat injuries. If you do suffer an injury, a chiropractic sports physician can diagnose the injury and provide the appropriate treatment. This may include chiropractic adjustments, stretching, myofascial release, Graston®, taping, and other modalities.
  • They can help you rehabilitate after injuries. After an injury, you will need to rehabilitate your body in order to return to your sport. A chiropractic sports physician can help you with this process by providing exercises and other treatments.
  • They can provide advice on nutrition, fitness, and other aspects of sports performance. Chiropractic sports physicians are experts in sports medicine, and they can provide you with advice on how to improve your overall health and fitness.
